Today we’re talking with Marko Bistroi, Equipment Manager at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club in Ontario, Canada (not Ontario, California). Mississauga is a private 18-hole club, and Marko is running a true one-man shop out of a small space tucked under the clubhouse. His fleet is a mix of Toro, John Deere, Tru-Turf rollers, and a handful of other pieces that keep him on his toes.
Marko shares how he made the jump from automotive into turf after coming across a job posting, starting in a hybrid grounds and shop role before stepping into the head position. We get into the realities of being a solo tech — keeping up with the daily grind like greasing, prioritizing what matters most, and managing stress when everything falls on you.
He also talks about navigating the “young guy” dynamic with staff, and the impact of mentorship along the way, especially lessons from Jerry around organization, problem solving, and having a fix-before-replace mindset. There are some great practical tips in here too, from using muffin trays to keep hardware sorted to reel setup and pulling broken bolts.
They also touch on tournament prep, volunteering opportunities, and a few safety stories from the course. It’s a real look at running a one-man shop, figuring things out as you go, and building confidence along the way.

Manning let's have some Welcome to The Real Turf Text Podcast, episode 1 65. Today we're talking to Marco Busto, equipment Manager at Mississauga Golf and Country Club in Ontario, Canada, not Ontario, California. Mississauga Is a private 18 hole country club. Mark is a one man show. They have a small shop under the clubhouse. He has Toro and Deere, some true turf rollers and other miscellaneous brands. Let's talk to Marco.
Trent Manning, CTEMWelcome Marco to the Real Turf X Podcast. Thanks for coming on.
Marko BistroiThank you.
Trent Manning, CTEMHow you doing today?
Marko BistroiNot bad. How about yourself?
Trent Manning, CTEMPretty good. Just running around a little bit crazy, but try trying to get in the groove here. The podcast groove.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMTell us how you got into the turf industry.
Marko BistroiI feel like I have a similar story to a lot of people here. I came from automotive.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko BistroiI, uh, I, that's kind of what I studied in school, high school and whatnot. Went to college for it. Did the program, whatever, got an apprenticeship. Dealership, blah, blah, blah. But this is where the curve ball comes. I my service advisor was never filling out my hours, so, I got pretty fed up with that. Quit left, was looking for a job and found opportunity on the greens just on the ground. Staff to my house. And four years later, here we are.
Trent Manning, CTEMAll right. That's awesome. So yeah, how did you find the opportunity on the ground staff?
Marko BistroiIt was like a bit of a weird hybrid role. It was like it was like on the grounds team, but also a little bit in the shop. Kind of just cleaning equipment, um, like filling mixed fuel. Just kind of like little things here and there to help the equipment manager and, they saw my resume and they thought this could be something. And at that first late fall they decided to extend me throughout the winter. And just really liked how I was and I became the assistant after that.
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's cool, man. That's awesome.
Marko BistroiYeah,
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah. So, but what got you to the golf course? Was it an ad in the paper? Did you,
Marko Bistroiit was an odd Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMman. Yeah. Yeah. So the ad still work,
Marko BistroiIt still works. Yeah. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMthat was only four years ago and you saw the ad online,
Marko BistroiIt was, it was on Indeed.
Trent Manning, CTEMIndeed. Yeah. Yeah.
Marko Bistroiin the States. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMOh yeah. Yep. Yeah. Indeed's pretty popular around here, so yeah never know. You might find the next ace. A golf course technician right there on in Indeed. That's awesome, man. And you got to spend a lot of time working with Jerry. Not correct. That's cool, man. Yeah. Yeah. He's a top-notch guy for sure. Yeah. What did, and so he left there Mississauga, right. And went to another club.
Marko BistroiCorrect. Yeah. Way closer to his house,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, he was telling me, yeah, it was a whole lot closer, but maybe not a little bit lower end club. Not as nice
Marko Bistroiyeah, like slightly. for sure.
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah. Yeah. That's cool though,
Marko Bistroicaliber. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. Yeah, I was surprised to see how many golf courses there is and y'all's area up there. It was pretty cool to see all that. What's your least favorite part of the job?
Marko BistroiGreasing.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Okay. I can get with that.
Marko Bistroiit's not sand. It's greasing for me.
Trent Manning, CTEMI don't blame you one bit. Yeah. Do you, do you have a certain zerk that is the worst one to get to or something?
Marko BistroiThere's a couple on the 43 hundreds that I don't love.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko BistroiMostly because my hoist doesn't go like all the way up, so I kind of have to do it on the ground. That's, that's what makes it hard for me. But, yeah, it's just greasing and the amount of greasing. It's just like you gotta stay on top of it and it just, it sucks. You just, I have long hair too, so if I stick my head somewhere, I come out. I have grease on my head. It is just, it's a whole thing.
Trent Manning, CTEMI don't, yeah. That is, that's never been a problem that I've experienced was getting grease in my hair, but I could see that could definitely be a problem.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, for sure.
Marko BistroiYeah that's my least favorite
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. I don't blame you there. Yeah. I don't know many people that really enjoy that. Um, some people really don't like it and they let the crew do it,
Marko BistroiYeah, I would love that. I would love that.
Trent Manning, CTEMYou know, but when the crew does it, that doesn't necessarily mean it always gets done. You know,
Marko BistroiExactly.
Trent Manning, CTEMyou got cutting corners and yeah. All those type things.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMfavorite tool? A grease gun? Cut.
Marko Bistroithat's a close second. The electric grease gun for sure is up there. But I'd say I don't know why. Honestly, I have. This little quarter inch snap-on ratchet, it's got a three eighths head.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yeah,
Marko BistroiI don't know why I like it so much. I don't know why I bought it, but I love it and I use it all the time.
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah. No, I'm with you man. I got the quarter inch version and it's my go-to ratchet. I mean, I love the quarter inch drive and so a good friend of mine, he is been on the podcast too. David Blau. I went and talked to him. This is years ago. I was. Thinking about going to work. And it was at a, he worked, he was the service manager for the John Deere distributor in our area. And I went up there and talked to him for a day, and I don't even remember how it come up, but we were talking about tools and he said, yeah, I use, you know, a lot of quarter inch drive stuff. And at the time I wasn't using that much, you know, I was using three eights for everything. And I'm like, you know, why are you using quarter, you know, kind of thing. And ah, that's not. Cool. And you know, he's obviously much older than me, not a lot older than me, but older than me and more experienced. And he said, why do you want to use, you know, a big heavy wrench if the smaller one will get the job done? I'm like, okay. That kind of stuck with me. So ever since that conversation, I really have lent into the quarter inch drive stuff. And at the golf course, most of the stuff that we've. Work on, I mean, you could do a lot of stuff with a quarter inch drive
Marko BistroiYeah. Yep.
Trent Manning, CTEMand same thing, you know, it's smaller, you get into tighter areas and all the things. So
Marko BistroiA hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMI'm, with you on those electric ratchets. They're awesome.
Marko BistroiYep. For sure.
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah, IUI use one for removing bed knife bolts. The pivot bolts on the toros. Yeah. Zip it right out. Yeah. The other cool thing about doing that, using some type of electric tool to remove the pivot bolts is it's more visible if the bolt is bent. You know,
Marko Bistroithat's true because it's just going so, yeah, exactly.
Trent Manning, CTEMwhen it's coming out. Not that you can't notice it if you're taking it out by hand, but it definitely shows up a little bit
Marko BistroiYeah. A little bit easier to notice, for sure. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat do you do to relax or find your balance?
Marko BistroiHonestly, I'm, I find I'm pretty good at off when I leave work, uh, in the first place. Uh, but yeah, thank you.
Trent Manning, CTEMI was never able to do that.
Marko BistroiBut I play a lot of basketball
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yeah.
Marko Bistroihang out friends and family and just kinda a lot of hobby stuff.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. No, that's awesome. That's fun.
Marko Bistroicars, this and that. Just anything,
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yeah. What kind of cards are you into?
Marko BistroiOof. That's like a Endless list. I, uh, yeah I'm in a phase of liking older, like European cars, like Alfa Romeos and whatever, and it's kind of a big restoration. I've never done one. I'd like to do a restoration, but,
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiAll that type stuff really piques my interest,
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yeah, no, that's super cool. I mean, that's something I've definitely thought about and I'm like, that would be cool. But I don't, the way I'm wired, I like the instant gratification. If I can't get it done in a weekend.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMam probably gonna forget about it, you know, and move on to the next shiny object. That's just kind of the way my brain works, you know, the guys and gals that spend years restoring stuff. I'm like, it's just
Marko BistroiIt's impressive.
Trent Manning, CTEMIt is very
Marko Bistroivery impressive. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYet, this past weekend I went to world of Wheels. It was in Kansas City.
Marko Bistroimm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYou know, big car show and it was, I mean, some of the cars there, it's just amazing, the attention to detail that those people put into restoring a car.
Marko BistroiEvery nut and bolt is like, Yeah. it's crazy. I don't know if I can get to that level, but maybe just get a junker running again.
Trent Manning, CTEMHey, well, yeah. You know, you gotta start right? You gotta start somewhere. For sure.
Marko BistroiRight.
Trent Manning, CTEMI don't know what it's called. I'm sure there's a term for it, but some of the old paint jobs that they just clear over top of
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMAnd it looks so cool.
Marko BistroiI don't know what it's called, but yeah,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. You know, you can still see the rust and everything else that's in the paint, but you can tell it's got some kind of clear coat over it.
Marko BistroiA hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMSuper cool stuff.
Marko BistroiYeah. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat's been one of your biggest challenges to date?
Marko BistroiI think the obvious is being the young guy.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yep. Yep.
Marko BistroiThat's just been a brutal like battle. You know, I obviously wouldn't say like I'm anywhere near the top of the mountain.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiYou know, a lot of older guys don't even think I've been on a hike yet. And
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah.
Marko Bistroiit's just, it's really hard to, you know, and I'm, I try to be always very respectful and I am open to any and every idea, and know there's a lot to learn. But at the same time it's can be very frustrating especially with, you know, your older staff
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, that's what I was wondering. Yeah. Is this more of a staff type stuff? Perfect.
Marko BistroiDefinitely our staff, you know, and, uh,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah.
Marko Bistroiespecially our rough guys, you know, they think they are, you know, the end all, be all of how to cut rough. And it's guys
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's tough. Definitely a tough one.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Is there any way that you kinda how do you handle
Marko BistroiI kind If I, if it's, I try to give them facts almost, or just kind of like point to the cause like, um, I try to use like visuals or anything. If they're doing something wrong and you can see that it's wrong, I'll sh like visually show them that it's wrong and show them what the right weight would look like.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiIf it kind of gets outta that realm where they just keep blowing me off, I'll just kind of take it to my super.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah.
Marko BistroiIt's, it'll be wrapped up from there. But like we have a big issue where our rough guys will get too close to trees and then they'll either clip the tree or like part of the root that's coming outta the ground a little. We will hit our mulch kit and rip off the mulch kit.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah.
Marko Bistroiso I'm always like, guys, please you know, I'm almost like standing there watching them do it.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah.
Marko BistroiThey don't listen. They don't listen da. But once super gets involved, it's good for about three weeks,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah,
Marko Bistroiso,
Trent Manning, CTEMI don't, yeah, I mean, that's a tough one. Yeah,'cause I mean, everybody's been the new kid on the block, so to speak. And,
Marko Bistroimm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYou definitely don't get the respect that you deserve or need. And that's really a tough one. But at least the superintendent's got your back and tries to stand up, you know, for what needs to be done the right way.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat's,
Marko BistroiNice.
Trent Manning, CTEMwhat's one of the strangest things you've seen at the course?
Marko BistroiWe have we've got a river that runs through our course.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiAnd we hired a new assistant a few years ago and he was spraying incorrectly, like direction wise. We spray certainties in whatever app certain way because of the river. And he ended up in the river
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, wow.
Marko Bistroiin the Frayer,
Trent Manning, CTEMWith the sprayer, that's
Marko Bistroithe fairer. So that was probably the strangest thing I've seen
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah, definitely. So was it really hard to get out?
Marko BistroiIt honestly wasn't like, it was kind of like just, it just kind of rolled down the bank, honestly. And it was a hydrostat, uh, sprayer at the time, so it just obviously didn't have the power to get out of there, and it just kind of like softly rolled into the middle of the river.
Trent Manning, CTEMthat's, well, yeah. At least no one was injured and sounds like the equipment was okay too,
Marko BistroiYeah, it wasn't that bad, honestly,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. That's
Marko Bistroito a couple tractors and slowly pulled it out.
Trent Manning, CTEMyep. Yep. All right. Good stuff.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMDo you have a mentor in the industry?
Marko BistroiProbably Jerry,
Trent Manning, CTEMProbably Jerry. All right.
Marko Bistroiyeah, for sure.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat are some of the things that you learned from Jerry?
Marko BistroiThat's a big list, but we could definitely start with ever met Jerry, he's very organized. Kind of guy. He definitely taught me elite level cleaning organization. Just overall tidiness and just, kind of, like showing almost like elegance in your job.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko Bistroilike, you know, that messy mechanic kind of thing that was big. A lot of patience for sure. And, i've adopted his muffin trays, still do the muffin trays with the organization. And yeah, he is definitely taught me he always used to say to me when I first started treat, don't treat this as a job, treat it as a career.
Trent Manning, CTEMAh. Yeah, I like that one. That's great.
Marko BistroiI never I never really took it in until like my second or third year. And then I'm like, okay. You know, I could like really start doing this if I just apply myself more and really focus on this and
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. That's awesome. Super cool.
Marko Bistroithat was, that's always always sticks with me.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. No, that's a good one. I'm gonna have to write that one down. Tell me more about the muffin Trace.
Marko BistroiSo Jerry used to use Muffin Trace for organizing. If you were to like I'm currently taking part A prog and doing the clutch on it, so, instead of sticking all the bolts in you know, a piece of cardboard or even Ziploc work, I've done Ziplocs too, but muffin tray just
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah.
Marko Bistroikeeps it organized.
Trent Manning, CTEMSteal it from the, the kitchen,
Marko BistroiYeah. exactly. And who doesn't have an old muffin tray and nice to have. And it's like small, nice depth. I don't know. It's kind of quick and easy.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, I like it. No, that is a good idea.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. What else?
Marko Bistroithere's a lot from Jerry.
Trent Manning, CTEMI know I Something else.
Marko Bistroia big thing for Jerry was almost like his kindness
Trent Manning, CTEMHmm.
Marko Bistroia different kind of level. I've always been used to like kind of being scrutinized and almost just really been yelled at and whatnot for maybe breaking a bowl. Or you know, doing a procedure incorrectly. But almost encouraged it of thing. Like, just like it's the only way you're gonna learn kind of thing. And if there's always a, there's always a solution to fixing something or getting something out or whatnot.
Trent Manning, CTEMRight.
Marko BistroiI really I think a lot of people have this, but it's really nice to see that he's one of the guys that has that mentality of trying to fix something before just replacing it. Even though we're at a bigger club that can afford to just replace it. So it was, it's nice for that'cause I've adapted it as well and I'm always trying to like, fix it first before getting a replacement or whatnot.
Trent Manning, CTEMI mean, and especially society in general. There's just so many things. It's just we live in a throwaway world, you know, and people don't repair stuff or fix things, anything, anywhere like they used to. But I'm, you know, I'm the same way. You know, I'm a high end club and I don't care. I want to try to figure it out. What's wrong with it Is it something I can make? Is it something I can buy? You know, how can we fix this thing without just buying another one? You know? And I've always thought about it like that. That's why the club pays me to be here to fix stuff. I want to fix stuff. And for all the people listening at clubs that don't have budgets, I don't see how they do it. You know, when the.
Marko BistroiVery impressive. Yes. Yeah, I agree.
Trent Manning, CTEMthey're getting paid to repair stuff, but they can't buy parts. It's what's going on here?
Marko BistroiAnd they do magical things.
Trent Manning, CTEMwell,
Marko BistroiI admire it.
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah, Mm-hmm. Yeah, for sure. Yeah,
Marko Bistroireally do.
Trent Manning, CTEMthose guys and gals really have to put their head down and figure out some hard problems. but, you know, I do think that's a good way to, to learn too. To experience some of that stuff because if you've only worked at a high-end club and you just replace stuff all the time, you know, you don't necessarily get the experience of how you can make something work
Marko BistroiA hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMthink outside the box.
Marko BistroiYeah. We used to if we like, were in a really tight pinch and we had to just, you know, call Toro quick replacement, we would keep the old part and then he'd, Jerry would just let me rebuild it off to the side and we
Trent Manning, CTEMI, yeah, yeah, Yeah.
Marko Bistroikind of thing, and just now we have one on the shelf and I got to learn how to rebuild it. So it's kind of. Two for one
Trent Manning, CTEMBut no, I agree. Yeah, I had, I replaced a hydraulic. Pump on a tractor and it was under warranty and I still hadn't taken it apart, but it's still setting setting on the shelf because I said, let's save that and it'll be a good tool, you know, we can take it apart, see how it works on the inside and show the other guys, you know, how hydraulic G rotor works,
Marko BistroiA hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, because you might not want to learn that the day that you need to rebuild one. So why not, you know, why not learn that? During the wintertime when the
Marko Bistroibit easier and slower pace.
Trent Manning, CTEMnot as much pressure on the line.
Marko BistroiYeah, 100%. Hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat would be your dream job or opportunity?
Marko BistroiIn Canada, there's a couple courses in Vancouver that are really nice, uh, that I don't know I'm a sucker for a views
Trent Manning, CTEMOh yeah, man. I'm right there with you. I love some views
Marko BistroiI guess the same thing would apply to the States anywhere with nice views. But I also am a big fan of tournaments.
Trent Manning, CTEMokay?
Marko Bistroiwould love to work at a club that hosted like big PGA events and whatnot. I just think I know it's a lot of work, obviously. But we had one last year and it was just so cool to be a part of.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat'd you have?
Marko Bistroiwe had the women's CPKC,
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko Bistroiso it wasn't, you know, not as big as PGA event,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, but I mean, that's still a big deal.
Marko BistroiSame, yeah, same kind
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's cool. Yeah.
Marko Bistroiand it was just such an unreal week.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiSo much fun. And
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's awesome.
Marko Bistroiyeah, if I could do that once a year, that'd be really cool. While I'm young.
Trent Manning, CTEMRight, right. Super cool. Um, have you ever volunteered at a tournament or anything like that?
Marko BistroiI haven't, but I really want to,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah.
Marko BistroiEspecially like abroad, I'd love to, you know, go to anywhere in the States, especially during the winter. Uh, like the Phoenix Open or whatnot, a few weeks ago, even saw Gass, like, it's still like winter for us. So it'd be great to go there for the week and see what it's like in the shop.'cause I'm sure they could always use hands.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, no, they can always use hands and you know, depending on the tournament, you know, some of'em get a lot more volunteers than others,
Marko Bistroimm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMbut I mean, pretty much any tournament takes volunteers and it usually isn't a long drawn out process to get your name in the hat either. You just have. You know, a lot of times they'll send out an email, you know, mass email to a bunch of different people and you can forward that on. But the good thing, you're already inside the industry, you know, if you wanna pick one out, you want to go to, you let me know and I'll make some phone calls and we'll see if we can hook it up for you. Um, I'm serious.
Marko Bistroilove to do
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah. Yeah.'cause it is awesome. Yeah, so this year I'm gonna do the US Open at Shinnecock and I'm doing the BMW Championship at Bell Reef in August. And that's one of the good cool things with this new job, you know. When I was at the golf course, it's pretty hard to get off work from April to through October in the
Marko Bistroiyeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMUm, so this is a super cool opportunity for me, so I'm gonna take advantage of it as much as I can and work as many tournaments as I can.
Marko Bistroia hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah,'cause it is so much fun. And don't get me wrong, it's a lot of work and long hours and.
Marko BistroiOh
Trent Manning, CTEMThey u they usually feed you good though. A lot. Usually good food. And you can take naps during the day, you know,'cause you start super early and, you know, after you get the mowers checked in or whatever, you catch a little nap before evening and shift comes in. It's so much fun. I, yeah, I highly recommend it to anyone.
Marko BistroiAnd if you're volunteering for it, you don't have that stress of it being your golf course,
Trent Manning, CTEMOh yeah, a hundred percent. I
Marko Bistroiand, yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMI remember being at east Lake, this was a bunch of years ago, but and it was like the evening shift and there was a greens mower that. The, I don't remember it was leaking engine all, I don't remember from where. And not bad. Not, I mean, it wasn't a terrible leak, but enough. And they're like, what do you think? And I'm like, ain't my decision to make, you know, point to Chris. I'm like, what you wanna do, Chris? This is you. This is all on you. You know, I'm happy to help however I can, but I ain't gotta make this decision.
Marko BistroiYou're not the decision maker, you're just, you're the sheep in that situation.
Trent Manning, CTEMright. Yep. I'm just there to help out.
Marko Bistroiyeah. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat technician would you like to work with for a day?
Marko BistroiI wouldn't mind working with Jerry again for a day.
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, that's awesome, man. I'm glad y'all got along so good. That's so cool.
Marko Bistroiyeah, we definitely did. I, I'd also I'd love to work with it. I see the group chat and, you know, everybody's so intelligent and has their own unique problems, and obviously course every course is different. Like I can say anybody. Honestly, like I, I'd work with anybody for a day,
Trent Manning, CTEMI'm with you. Yeah, i, would like to work with anybody for a day, and it doesn't matter if you've been doing it a year or. 25, you're still gonna learn something from people.'cause you know, we all got, we all come from different backgrounds and you know, a lot of, there's a lot of tribal knowledge in that group too.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMcame from not just golf courses, you know, whatever, when they were growing up as kids, you know how to tie a knot or you know, what, you know, whatever it is. Um, all kind of stuff to be learned from others.
Marko Bistroia hundred percent. But, Yeah I'd pick Jerry, I think I'd put him at the top of the list first.
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's awesome, man. Yeah, I wa hell, I wanna work with Jerry for a day. Uh, Yeah. I definitely plan on getting back up that way. Hopefully we'll be doing some demos up there this summer, so I will,
Marko Bistroibe really
Trent Manning, CTEMdefinitely look y'all up when I get up there. What do you know now you wish you'd known on day one?
Marko BistroiThat's a good one.
Trent Manning, CTEMThat is a good one, that one came from Miles Kemp, the guy that makes the birdie bar.
Marko BistroiOh yeah. Okay.
Trent Manning, CTEMYep. That was one of the questions that he submitted and I thought, this is a really good question and it, you know, a lot of people, I don't wanna say it gets them, but it definitely makes them think,
Marko BistroiYeah, it is.
Trent Manning, CTEMand there's no right or wrong answer.
Marko BistroiYeah, I guess that's true. Um, feel like, I feel like my big thing that I'm even still trying to work on now is just I really gotta keep reminding myself about the stress almost of this job. I wish I, you know, and I keep telling myself, like I said, like I just wish I knew that I'm only one person, I can only do so much.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiYou know, I gotta, I just gotta prioritize and stay within my limits, really. It's just if I knew that on day one I'd probably even have more hair on my head.
Trent Manning, CTEMAll right.
Marko Bistroialready have a lot, but, Still gets me. It's just, it could be a very stressful job. You could have very stressful days and you know, three, four things break a day and you're just like, almost in shambles. You're just like, what do I, where am I going right now? What am I doing?
Trent Manning, CTEMOh,
Marko Bistroijust feel like you gotta be there the whole day.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm. No it's so true. And yeah, it's so easy to get caught up in it, and you know, and. I mean, I'm one of the world's worst about, yeah, letting it drive my day by what all's happening to me or not to me, but you know, happened at other course that day and it's really hard to step back or definitely for me it's really hard to step back and say, we're just mowing grass, or we're just making tall grass, short, you know, and I've, you know, you hear plenty of people joke about that. But it's amazing how tempers flare and all the things that happen just making tall grass. Short.
Marko BistroiOr just over grass
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Just over, over grass. It's grass,
Marko Bistroiand you talk to other people about it, and they look at you like you're crazy. Like they're just like, it's just grass
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. It is to them. But you know, when you're living and breathing it. It seems like a lot more than that,
Marko BistroiYeah,
Trent Manning, CTEMknow, and all that's driven from the golfer and their expectations and I mean it all, like the old saying goes, it all rolls downhill towards us,
Marko BistroiYeah,
Trent Manning, CTEMbut how do you deal with that person?
Marko BistroiI feel like. I try to, at the beginning of the year from the start, from orientation, I try to be very approachable.
Trent Manning, CTEMMm-hmm.
Marko BistroiI try to, I can win the young guys over no problem. They'll tell me if anything breaks or if they even hear a squeak or whatever. Winning over the older guys is a little bit harder, but we've had a repetitive staff for the last few years, so it's been pretty good. But dealing with that guy, I just, I try to like, hold everything in. I'm not a very, I don't get loud, I don't get hostile.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah.
Marko BistroiI'll just kind of tell them like, Hey you're just, there's a better way to do what you're doing wrong or whatever the
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Whatever. It's, yeah.
Marko BistroiAnd I just kind of really try to hear both sides of the story. I'll let them explain whatever they have to say, and then I'll just. I kind of correct them with fact and it's resolved.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. No, and I think that's a good way to handle it too. You know, let them tell their side of the story, and like they say, there's always three sides to the story, right? Their side. The other side and what really happened, you know, is somewhere in between that. So yeah, but everybody, no matter you know, what your background is, everybody wants to be heard, right? So, you know, if we can actively listen to what they're telling us and then try to shed some light on maybe some ways to prevent this from happening in the future, and let them know what kind of. Issues or work it creates for you when this happens. You know, I understand that it happened this way, but when this happens, then I have to do this, and this to fix it,
Marko BistroiRight.
Trent Manning, CTEMSo next time could you try to do it this way?
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYou know what? Whatever it's so, Yeah. for sure.
Marko BistroiIt's it's funny you say that because at my course we have a nice steep downhill into a sharp left and. I if I had I don't know how many times I tell a new staff drive down this hill slowly, and it has like a runoff, straight runoff too. If, you know, God forbid, maybe the brakes went out halfway through, there's a runoff. People like accelerate down this hill and we'll try to make the left. And I've, we've had three cart flip over and one end up in the river.
Trent Manning, CTEMWow. Yeah. Yeah. That's super dangerous.
Marko Bistroiit is unreal. And those are the moments that maybe I can get a little hostile
Trent Manning, CTEMOh yeah. I mean, that's,
Marko Bistroiit's unreal how people almost have to see that before they're like, whoa, We should stop doing that.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. mean,'cause that's seriously dangerous and somebody's really gonna get hurt if not killed,
Marko Bistroiyeah. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMyou know?
Marko BistroiYeah. And we've had the one girl, I don't know how she managed just a bruise. Uh, the other guy broke his leg
Trent Manning, CTEMWow.
Marko Bistroiflipping a club car on himself. And it's just,
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah.
Marko Bistroiit's not a game. It's not like, I know it's a golf cart and it's fun. It's what, you know, but it, this could happen.
Trent Manning, CTEMNo, it's very serious. Yeah, so we got a forklift at the golf course, and I was training everybody, or not everybody, but training the people, you know how to use it, and it's got a seatbelt and it's got wraps and all that stuff. I'm like, if you're on the forklift, you need your seatbelt on. So one of our assistant superintendents, I see him on the forklift and he doesn't have his seatbelt on. And I'm like, man I know the ground is flat around here. You don't think it's gonna tip over whatever, wear your seatbelt. I don't want to have to explain to your wife or your child that's 1-year-old that John got killed because he didn't have on his seatbelt. You know, that's not a conversation I want to have with somebody's significant other. So, I That's how serious it is. And I do think, you know, when you tell people that way, you know, I'm gonna have to tell your wife and your kid that you weren't wearing your seatbelt. You know, maybe, hopefully that drives it home and hopefully that prevents an accident down the road.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMhe never has an accident, but okay.
Marko Bistroiyeah. It's not worth it over a seatbelt. It's not worth it.
Trent Manning, CTEMNot worth it. No.
Marko Bistroia hundred percent.

Get ready for tips and tricks
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat kind of tips and tricks you got, you wanna share?
Marko BistroiI feel like I don't have a lot.
Trent Manning, CTEMWell, that's fine, man.
Marko BistroiI should be asking you guys for all the
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. Well, what kind of tips and tricks did Jerry teach you?
Marko BistroiJerry showed me, well, I, I feel like a lot of people know this one, but he showed me when you have your, on the Toro heads when you have your bed knife out and whatnot. And if you just put in like the pivot bolts and not like the ones on the back, you can, you know, it's a quick way to check for quick comb in the reel with the little shims on the side. Little stuff like that gave me a lot of tricks on how to get out. Snapped heads like snap bolts.
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay. Yeah. Let's go over some of those. Yeah. What are they?
Marko Bistroian infamous one, what we used to have was on our 4,300 the one that like holds in the deck on on the backside there. We have really bad wash boarding at my course, so those bolts would back out all the time and I'd eventually over tightening them every single day. I would snap'em every once in a while
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko Bistroiand I honestly became a pro at taking them out. I, I got an automatic center punch and heat it up. Sometimes I would get lucky if you drill it and it catches it, right, it will just zip right through the other side and you can slide the pin out. Other times we have a really good extractor kit and it's like one of those ones that are like the, like tapered square kind of ones. Hammer it in there. Heat penetrating fluid, vice grip, at the bottom there and easy to, I don't know. It's all feel
Trent Manning, CTEMit is, there's a ton of feel in it. I agree with that a hundred percent.
Marko Bistroiit's it's a tough one. But I've definitely snapped a couple of those in there. Those were pain to get out, but usually I don't know. I have a really high success rate honestly,
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's good. That's awesome, man. Do you,
Marko Bistroimy time with it.
Trent Manning, CTEMdo you buy lottery tickets after you get a bolt out?
Marko BistroiI do not. I probably should.
Trent Manning, CTEMNo I've never been much of a gambler either. I don't buy lottery tickets, but I've heard that plenty of times, and I'm with you. I do
Marko Bistroime
Trent Manning, CTEMSay again.
Marko Bistroithat it's enough success for me that's enough of a good feeling just getting it out.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, for sure. I de I'm with you. I like the square extractors better than the ones that are, have a helix or whatever on'em. Yeah, they just, they seem to work better the square ones,
Marko BistroiI agree.
Trent Manning, CTEMand
Marko Bistroiif I feel like if I drill a little bit deeper in, then you could just hammer it in a little bit more
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. True. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's true too. Yeah.'cause the ones with the spiral, I've definitely snapped off plenty of those, but I feel like the square ones don't snap as easy,
Marko BistroiYeah. Yeah. Especially Yeah. Yeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, and sometimes with the spiral ones, depending on the size of the hole, it'll kind of pull itself in there more instead of biting and to get it out, but, and
Marko Bistroiand then I find when when you round it, it'll just. And then you're like, you're toast.
Trent Manning, CTEMthat
Marko BistroiIf it pulls in and just rounds instead of like, you know, extracting, you're like, okay, well
Trent Manning, CTEMYep. Gotta start over.
Marko Bistroiyeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. I don't, yeah, I had, it was Kubota, SVL 75, so, track, skid steer, and we replaced the sprockets and when, and it was done in the field.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, so not ideal situation. Anyway, the, I don't think the bolts got torqued properly. On the sprocket and it ended up breaking every one of them off. They all sheared and there was, I don't like eight or nine bolts and they were like 16 millimeter.
Marko BistroiYeah. Wow.
Trent Manning, CTEMlike the, it was a day and a half to get all those out. I was welding nuts on'em, trying to get'em out that way. It was terrible. It was really awful.
Marko Bistroithat's a lottery ticket moment.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. I guess I don't, that was miserable. Yeah. Don't want to go back to that.
Marko Bistroimm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMWhat else do you wanna talk about?
Marko BistroiI honestly had a, so before I got the position at the club, I really wanted to do some sort of like internship. Abroad or just yeah, just kind of furthering education, I guess. And you know, I really feel like the states is the way to go. We have obviously some good opportunities up here, but there's just so much more in the states that like have more facilities for like housing and whatnot.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah.
Marko Bistroibut it was tough.'cause there's no there's nobody like posting. that, it's always you know, AITs outta school or whatnot that they want. So I found myself just, I made an email and I just send it to superintendents all over the states
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's awesome, man. So cool.
Marko BistroiI got a few polls
Trent Manning, CTEMOkay.
Marko BistroiI was gonna do them but I ended up getting the head job, so
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah.
Marko BistroiI stayed, but. I'm still hoping to do it one day. Uh, I would love to do it for a few, like a season or
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, that would be so cool. I mean, just the, you know, experience, you know, a different place, whatever it is. That would be super cool. yeah. if you could do something like that would be awesome. And I mean, it's back to the volunteering thing, you know, you can definitely do that'cause you can get away for a week, especially if it's in the wintertime, you know, for y'all and you're not a whole lot going on or something like that. So. Another thing that a couple friends of mine are gonna do this summer. I talked to one of'em today, but I didn't even think to ask. They're gonna trade assistance for a week. And I think this is like the coolest idea and I don't it come up in the WhatsApp group maybe.
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMI remember talking to Seth Sheldon about doing it. Yeah, I don't remember whose idea it was, but a great idea, especially, you know, if you have an assistant let'em go work somewhere else for a week, know, that's, Super cool op opportunity for,
Marko BistroiYeah, a hundred percent.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Be
Marko BistroiWe so our course is actually connected to another golf course.
Trent Manning, CTEMmm-hmm.
Marko BistroiSo we actually used to have something like that where an a IT would work half the season with us and then drive across the street and work at the other golf course for the rest of the season.
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, that's cool. Yeah. Yeah.
Marko BistroiBut I just wish we were in a position to do
Trent Manning, CTEMUhhuh,
Marko Bistroior kind of thing, or just, obviously we can't do that now because, you know, we're in charge.
Trent Manning, CTEMUhhuh.
Marko BistroiI, that would be like something'cause it's just so. I find that there's just nothing on it, and everybody I talk to about this, everybody thinks it's a great idea and thinks it's really cool, but there's just that's kind of where it stops.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah. I don't, it does suck.'cause somebody, yeah, somebody needs to head that up. Who, who's all the clubs that are doing internship programs and how many do they offer each year? And'cause there is a bunch of clubs that do that. But yeah, I don't know how, I mean, occasionally I'll see something on social media where they're asking for interns, but you know, if I'm not looking at social media that day, I didn't hear about it. know, so it'd be cool if you know there was a website you could go to or something like that where all that is on there. I do think maybe they put some stuff on turf net. Maybe Gcsa job board. They might have something on there when they're looking for
Marko BistroiMm-hmm.
Trent Manning, CTEMinterns, but it'd be cool to have a central place
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMFor that. That would be really cool.
Marko BistroiAnd yeah, it's like you said, who's not asking for a hand in the shop,
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, right, right, right. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody is.
Marko Bistroiyeah, it'd be it's only a win-win that I see. Honestly
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. For both sides. Yeah.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMReally cool stuff. Yeah. Anything else you wanna talk about?
Marko BistroiI think that's all I've got, honestly.
Trent Manning, CTEMAlright, let's do some rapid fire
Marko BistroiAll right.
Trent Manning, CTEMand the age gap. Could be kind of funny here on what's your favorite movie?
Marko BistroiRush hour.
Trent Manning, CTEMOh yeah. That's a classic. That's awesome, man. Yeah. Okay. What would be your last meal?
Marko BistroiAnything My mom cooks maybe?
Trent Manning, CTEMAh, I love it. Yeah. Yeah. Like what's her best dish or what's your favorite dish?
Marko BistroiShe she makes a really good I don't even know how to explain it. It's like she makes a really good squash soup and then she pairs it with this really nice like steak dish,
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, okay. Cool. Yeah, I want, I want to come and eat with Marco's mom. Next time I'm up there. It just sounds good. You know, mom's cooking.
Marko BistroiYeah, mom's cooking.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, you can't beat mom's cooking. What are you most proud of besides your family?
Marko BistroiLike achievement wise
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah. Yeah
Marko BistroiI feel like seeing myself as like cheating.
Trent Manning, CTEMno it didn't. No, and I think it's really important, but I think it's also very hard for some of us anyway, to be proud of ourselves. But you should be proud of yourself.
Marko BistroiYeah. I feel like from where I've started to now I've come a pretty long way,
Trent Manning, CTEMYou've come so far and you need to, you know, be proud of yourself. not that I'm telling you what to do here but at your age I was definitely not proud of myself or seeing my value or all the things. And a lot of it, you know, and I ain't going to go down the rabbit hole, but. A lot of it was due to my upbringing and you know, things I went through as a kid and that kind of stuff. I didn't know that was okay to be proud of myself, you know? And sadly, I just figured that out three or four years ago that it's okay to be proud of yourself. So that's why I'm telling you now, it's okay to be proud of yourself.
Marko BistroiYeah. I think that would be, that'd be my answer
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's awesome, man. Yeah, no, and good for you. And yeah, you had a great mentor with Jerry and I'm sure y'all still talk. Um, yeah,
Marko BistroiYep.
Trent Manning, CTEMso I mean, that's really good. And I mean, I only know a handful of the guys up there in your area, but I mean, there's some really solid guys up there, know, with David Curie and Kevin Henneger and. Taylor. I mean, there's just some really good guys up there that,
Marko Bistroicurry was actually at our tournament for a couple days
Trent Manning, CTEMOh, really? Okay, cool.
Marko Bistroihe was hanging out in the shop with us.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, he's a awesome guy.
Marko BistroiI like Dave. He's funny.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah. Yeah, he is funny. He was going, I felt so bad when I was up there, I said, how's your mom? And he said She passed away six months ago. I felt terrible. Um, but. And the, one of the reasons I asked is she used to have a place in Florida and he would drive her car down or him and his sister would take turns, like one of'em would drive it down, one of'em would drive it back. So she'd have her car down there. And anyway, he was coming through Atlanta and he got a hotel close to me and he come over and hung out with me for a morning. And it was just awesome. You know? I mean, it was fun. It was cool. So anyway, I was asking how his mom was like, okay, lemme pull the foot outta my mouth. I felt terrible. Yeah. But anyway, super good guy. Um, and growing up in the south, there's a lot of hospitality down here in the south, you know, and everybody, yes ma'am. No ma'am, all that stuff. But being around Canadians, most of y'all are so polite and so nice. The hospitality. Yeah it definitely challenges Southern hospitality. Everybody I've met up there is always so nice.
Marko BistroiI am glad you enjoyed your time
Trent Manning, CTEMyeah,
Marko Bistroithe conference too.
Trent Manning, CTEMAnd yeah, maybe I hadn't been to the wrong place in Canada yet, but all the places I've been to in Canada have been really nice people wise for sure. And scenery. The scenery's been good. All right, let's wrap this thing up.
Marko BistroiSounds good.
Trent Manning, CTEMYep. Let's see. Yeah, that's a wrap. Thank you, Marco, for being on thoroughly enjoyed it.
Marko BistroiDid appreciate it.
Trent Manning, CTEMkeep up the good work too, man. That's good. Keep doing it. Yep.
Marko BistroiThank you. I, I honestly saw Jerry's episode. it, it came out like pretty recently at the time. And I like told myself, I'm like I'm gonna do this one day, but I just gotta I just gotta get there first, but I'll do it one day.
Trent Manning, CTEMThat's so cool, man. I'm so glad you're here. You're here.
Marko Bistroiyeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMit. You made it to
Marko BistroiI got to do it.
Trent Manning, CTEMNo, that's so cool. Yeah, well I remember I asked Jerry, I said, you think Marco would be interested? He said yeah. He needs to do it, man. Yeah. He wants to do it. So, so here you are. It is awesome.
Marko BistroiYeah.
Trent Manning, CTEMYeah, and for any of the people listening, if you wanna be on the podcast, just reach out to me. Send me an email or DM me, you know, you can get ahold of me all my info's out there, and I would love to have you on. Thanks again.
